Mike Breunling's Blog
I want to devote this week's blog to review where you can find local weather information on our main weather webpage... Of course by now you know the main weather page on our webchannel (www.wsaw.com/weather) provides access to plenty of local weather updates, including the Detailed Forecast, which includes the updated forecast for the area, snowfall updates for central and northern Wisconsin during and after winter storms, as well as all advisories, watches, and warnings in effect for the NewsChannel 7 broadcast area; access to radar images for the individual counties across the area through the exclusive My Local Titan link; and streaming video updates which allow you to watch and listen to our reports. There is also plenty of other interesting and relevant weather information available on the page.
Race wide open as weather closes in
Despite efforts to reform the primaries, Iowa and New Hampshire have clung on to their status as the first contests in the nation. These states go first not because they are litmus-test states or representative of broader America. In fact, Iowa, corn capital of the US, is whiter, more rural, older and probably wealthier than most states. On January 3 about 7% of Iowans will head out to "caucus" for their preferred candidate. The actual method of selecting candidates varies from state to state, but, generally, registered Democrat and Republican voters turn out for an election or a caucus to select delegates who will represent their preferred candidate at the parties' national convention later in the year. Unlike the staged doorstops that now characterise Australian political leaders' interactions with the public, American presidential hopefuls are expected to answer questions from anyone who turns up.

Machen shouldn't get bonus
So UF President Bernie Machen got almost $300,000 in bonuses from the UF Foundation right before Christmas. It was approved by the UF Board of Trustees. But has he been naughty or nice this year? Let's check Santa's list.He failed to meet his goal of making UF a top-10 public school - in fact, UF regressed on the list. He helped raise tuition without immediate benefits. Even his Florida Tomorrow fundraiser failed to address the debt UF faces. .
Cramming lots of extra features on GPS devices
They can plumb the Internet for the latest movie times, news headlines, stock figures and gas prices. They'll even help you skirt traffic, find a parking spot, or make a phone call. Oh, and they'll navigate for you, too. The latest global positioning system devices on display at this year's International Consumer Electronics Show were roving information portals - well beyond the first turn-by-turn GPS guides with maps and directions. Now practically taken for granted, GPS technology is available for tracking hikers, boaters and pilots, and it's routine in cars, sports watches and cell phones. As a result, plain-vanilla portable-navigation devices have plunged below $200, forcing manufacturers to fight for ways to continue commanding premium prices. Their response: to cram as many extra features on the devices as possible.

Daytona 500 ain't what it used to be
Swashbuckling style is long gone from these genteel drivers. THE ORLANDO SENTINEL Tuesday, February 19, 2008 DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — So much for NASCAR's plan for going back to basics and returning to the days when good ol' boys with a chaw of tobacco in their jaws would do anything to win the Daytona 500. Flash back to 1979 when two wild-eyed Southern boys, Cale Yarborough and Donnie Allison, wrecked each other desperately dueling for the victory and ended up brawling on the infield as Richard Petty whizzed by to take the checkered flag. Now fast forward to 2008 when Kurt Busch graciously helped teammate Ryan Newman to victory. "I was emotional pushing Ryan across the finish line," Busch said. "I'm not bitter at all about finishing second.
